Go Bags or Emergency Car Kits Save Lives
Winter weather can turn treacherous quickly. The recent blizzard that hit the northeast is evidence of how serious winter weather can be. To date there have been 35 weather related deaths. I believe most Americans are casual in their concerns about weather incidents; believing they are somehow superheroes that can overcome and conquer any weather traveling at high speeds in their weather proof cars. Warnings and weather alerts often go ignored and people don't alter or change plans. So first line of defense is to prepared when a weather alert is issued and error on the side of caution.
Second life of defense is a well stocked emergency car kit. This can be life saving when caught in a winter storm
Emergency supply of food and water
- a good kit has 3 days worth of food and water per person
- This means 2000 calories of food and a gallon of water for each day
- Consider a straw filtration, water bottles with integrated filters, or small water filter that filters out viruses, bacteria, and parasites.
- In snow one can fill up a water bottle with melted snow and drink it safely
- The body needs food and water to keep warm
- Battery powered or hand cranked radio
- flashlight, headlamps, extra batteries
- cell phone charger that plugs into car
- Duct tape
- Garbage bags
- Good knife and multi tool
- Jumper cable
- Tow ropes

- NEVER travel in the winter without bringing warm clothing. How many times do you see people at a gas station jump out in a snow storm in flip flops and shorts to get their snacks. If this is their ONLY clothing options and they get into trouble in a storm they will be in dire straights.
